Onboarding

Central Onboarding is conducted and facilitated by the Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical and Professional Development in collaboration with unit-based leadership and other clinical experts from across the MGH community.
Staff in the Norman Knight Nursing Center value the process of integrating a new employee into the Patient Care Services Department. Studies have shown that strong foundations and strong connections at the beginning of a work experience make for happier employees and stronger teams.
There is a 3-step process for onboarding new employees.

  1. A required 1.5-day hospital-wide orientation conducted by the Human Resources department is the first step for any employee of MGH. The goal is to introduce the new employee to the missions and values of MGH.
  2. As an employee of Patient Care Services, the 2nd step is an afternoon spent in the Nursing and Patient Care Services Orientation. This is an interdisciplinary orientation experience, conducted by the Norman Knight Nursing Center, seeking to educate clinical and support service staff in a collaborative environment.
  3. The 3rd step for a new employee in the Department of Nursing is to attend a role-specific central onboarding in the Norman Knight Nursing Center. Central onboarding is provided for Registered Nurses, Patient Care Associates, Operations Associates and Unit Service Associates.

Central onboarding includes didactic presentations, skills training, online learning, and independent activities, as well as introduction to the Professional Practice Model/Environment, the Magnet framework, Innovation, and our commitment to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for our patients, families, and staff.

New employees are assigned to orientation sessions by Human Resources
