My name is Corinne Fogarty. I have worked at MGH since 1999. I came to MGH to work as an OA on Bigelow 7, a busy GYN/Oncology floor. Watching the many caring, dedicated nurses on that floor helped me to realize that nursing was the career for me. I continued to work as an OA and then a PCA on Bigelow 7 as well as the pediatric units (Ellison 17 and 18) while attending nursing school. I graduated with my BSN from Regis College in 2006. I began working as a new grad in pediatrics and have enjoyed caring for young pediatric patients on Ellison 17 for my entire nursing career.
I have been an ARN since 2018. This role has given me the unique opportunity to optimize my nursing practice by providing care for all patients and families on our unit as well as further enhance my prioritization, mentoring and leadership skills. I enjoy collaborating with and assisting my fellow nurses with the care and concerns of our young patients and working with the interdisciplinary care team to provide them the very best care. Some nurses say they could never do kids, I wouldn’t want to do anything else, I get to care the patients and their whole family!
I have been chemo certified since 2008 and the pediatric Hem/Onc population truly hold a special place in my heart. I also became a Certified Pediatric Nurse in 2018 and proudly maintain that certification.
I have been part of several projects in collaboration with my nursing leadership to create meaningful change on our unit. One of the projects I’m most proud of is the Nurse Intern Partnership Program (a.k.a. nurse-buddy program.) This is a process improvement initiative that has been vital to building trusting relationships and fostering collaboration and teamwork between nurses and new interns. In short, pairing interns and nurses for several meet/greet opportunities and organized activities outside the day-to-day work environment have helped to build familiarity and comradery with one another and create a much better work environment where teamwork and collaboration thrives.
I am currently working on research to understand the potential benefits of proning patients with bronchiolitis requiring oxygen/ HFNC (high-flow nasal canula). Children between the ages of 0-2 who are admitted with this diagnosis are asked to wear a special sensor that captures VS data as well as position of the patient. I look forward to seeing the results of this data that would help us to better care for our many young respiratory patients and potentially prevent the need for escalation of care.
Outside of MGH, I keep busy. I’m the co-president of the PTO at my daughter’s elementary school. I also love to bake, party plan and dream about my next Disney vacation. I have an amazing son, Connor(12) and an adorably sassy daughter, Chloe (8). My husband is a project manager and has been working from home since the start of the pandemic. We all love cuddling with our mini golden doodle pup, Kiva.
I look forward to this new role as ARN co-chair and continued collaboration with other ARN’s hospital wide. Together we can make a difference for all the patients and families we care for, while at the same time making sure we all have what we need to care for one another.
