For MGH Professionals

MGH Men Against Abuse

MGH Men Against Abuse (MAA) is a group of men and their allies working under the umbrella of the MGH Domestic Violence Working Group (DVWG).  We meet regularly to advance our goals:  to heighten awareness of intimate partner abuse, especially of violence perpetrated by men against women, and to encourage self-education, speaking up and doing something about it.

We pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about men’s violence against women and all gender- based violence. We will respect, listen to and share power with the women in our lives.

MGH Men Against Abuse members can come to your department and provide information about intimate partner abuse and how men and their allies can work toward change.

See It...

  • Intimate partner abuse is about power and control
  • Abuse is not an anger management issue
  •  Controlling Behaviors:
    • Verbal abuse
    • Threats
    • Intimidation
    • Isolation from friends and family
    • Physical and sexual violence

Step Up...

  •  Acknowledge that the problem exists
  •  “We pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about men’s violence against women and all gender-based violence.  We will respect, listen to and share power with the women in our lives.”

Stop It.

  •  Realize that gender violence is a men’s issue that affects women you care about
  •  Don’t remain silent
  •  Understand how your own attitudes and actions may perpetuate sexism and violence, and work toward changing them
  •  Gently offer your help and support
  •  Respect women and treat them as equals
  •  Be an ally to women who are working to end all forms of gender violence
  •  Recognize and speak out against homophobia
  •  Educate yourself and others about masculinity, gender inequality and the root causes of gender violence
  •  Mentor and teach boys about how to be men in ways that don’t involve degrading or abusing girls and women
  •  Refuse to purchase any magazines, videos, or music that portray women in a degrading
    or violent manner
